Etsy Shop Name Generator: Brandable Names in Seconds

Updated 2026-06-18

This free Etsy shop name generator turns a few words about what you make into dozens of brandable shop name ideas that already fit Etsy’s rules. Describe what you sell, add your vibe, and copy a name straight into Etsy. No login, no email. We built it because we run real Etsy shops and remember how hard that first blank “Name your shop” box felt.

The short answer: A good Etsy shop name is 4–20 characters, letters and numbers only, no spaces or punctuation, and unique on Etsy. The generator below gives you ideas that already fit those rules — then you check the winner in Etsy search before you commit.

Generate Etsy shop name ideas

Inputs

  • What you sell (e.g. “hand-poured soy candles”, “leather wallets”, “watercolor pet portraits”)
  • Vibe / style words, optional (e.g. “cozy”, “modern”, “botanical”, “moody”)
  • Your first name or initials, optional (for founder-name ideas)

Outputs

  • A scrollable list of name ideas, each with a one-click copy button
  • A live character count and a green check / red flag against Etsy’s 4–20 character, letters-and-numbers-only rule
  • A “Check on Etsy” link next to each name that opens Etsy search for that exact name, so you can eyeball whether it’s taken

This generator validates Etsy’s format rules in your browser and helps you scan for conflicts. It does not connect to Etsy’s live database, so treat the availability check as a strong hint, not a guarantee — confirm in Etsy itself before you build a brand around a name.

Naming patterns we use

Most strong Etsy shop names fall into one of five patterns. The generator mixes them so you get range instead of twenty variations of the same idea. Pick the pattern that matches how you want buyers to think about you.

PatternHow it worksExample shape
DescriptiveSays what you sell, helps a stranger get it instantlyNorthOakLeather, TheCandleStudio
EvocativeSets a mood or world; lets you sell anything laterMossAndEmber, QuietHarbor
Founder-nameYour name or initials + a craft word; warm and personalClaraMakesClay, HardwoodByArtem
CompoundTwo plain words mashed into one ownable wordPaperFox, PineAndOak
InventedA coined word with no meaning yet — easiest to make uniquetusella, Velvora

Trade-off worth knowing: descriptive names are easier for a buyer to understand and can help a little in search, but they box you in (a name like MugWorld is awkward if you later add prints). Evocative and invented names give you room to grow but make you do more work to teach people what you sell. There’s no single right answer — pick for where you want the shop to be in two years.

Etsy shop name rules you must follow

These are Etsy’s actual rules for the shop name (the unique handle, e.g. PineAndOak), not the longer shop title you can edit freely later. Get a name idea that breaks one of these and Etsy simply won’t let you save it.

  • Length: 4 to 20 characters. Shorter than 4 or longer than 20 is rejected.
  • Letters and numbers only. No spaces, hyphens, ampersands, apostrophes, emoji, or other punctuation.
  • Capitalization is for readability, not separation. You can’t use spaces, so PineAndOak reads better than pineandoak — but Etsy treats the two as the same name.
  • It must be unique. No two open Etsy shops can share a name. Once a name has been used by an open shop, it stays reserved even if that shop later closes — so a “free” looking name may still be unavailable.
  • No “Etsy” in the name, and no trademarked terms you don’t own (brand names, characters, etc.) — these can trigger a takedown later.

Etsy shop name rules (2026), at a glance: 4–20 characters · letters and numbers only · no spaces or punctuation · must be unique across all open Etsy shops · capitalization doesn’t make a name different · you can change it up to 5 times after opening, then changes need Etsy Support approval.

How to check if an Etsy shop name is available

There’s no perfect public availability API, so use this quick three-step check before you commit:

  1. Search Etsy directly. Go to Etsy and search the exact name. If a shop with that handle exists, the name is taken. (The generator’s “Check on Etsy” links do exactly this for each idea.)
  2. Try the shop URL. Etsy shop pages live at etsy.com/shop/YourName. Type your candidate in. If it loads a shop, it’s taken; if it 404s, it’s probably free — but Etsy reserves names from closed shops too, so this isn’t definitive.
  3. Confirm at signup. The only true test is Etsy’s “Name your shop” box during shop creation. Etsy validates the name there in real time and tells you if it’s unavailable. Until you see Etsy accept it, treat any name as tentative.

A quick extra: grab the matching social handle and .com while you’re at it. You don’t need them to open a shop, but a name that’s free on Etsy and Instagram is far easier to brand.

Can you change your Etsy shop name later?

Yes — Etsy lets you change your shop name, and it’s free. Before you open your shop you can rename it as many times as you like. After your shop is open, you can change the name up to 5 times from your shop settings; after that, further changes require Etsy Support approval. Capitalization tweaks (e.g. woolberry to Woolberry) don’t count against that limit.

So the pressure to get it perfect on day one is lower than it feels — but it’s not zero. Two reasons to still choose carefully:

  • Your old name doesn’t come back. Once a name has been used by an open shop, it’s reserved permanently, even if you move off it. You can’t “park” names.
  • Renaming costs you equity. Links, reviews tied to your URL, repeat-buyer recognition, and any SEO you’ve built all point at the old name. Changing it isn’t a clean slate — it’s a small reset.

Bottom line: name it well enough that you’d be happy keeping it, and treat the rename allowance as a safety net, not a plan.

What makes a shop name memorable and search-friendly

The best names are easy to say out loud, easy to spell after hearing them once, and don’t fight Etsy search. A few things that consistently help:

  • Say it, then spell it. If a friend can’t spell it back after hearing it once, buyers won’t find you again. Avoid Kreative-style misspellings and silent letters.
  • Shorter wins. Inside the 4–20 range, aim for something you’d happily say on a podcast. PaperFox beats PaperFoxDesignsStudio.
  • Don’t keyword-stuff the name. Your shop name is your brand. Etsy search is mostly driven by your listing titles and tags, not by cramming “handmade silver ring” into a 20-character handle. Be brandable in the name; be descriptive in your titles. (See our Etsy SEO guide, and let the tag generator handle the keyword side.)
  • Check it doesn’t say something you didn’t mean. Mashed-together compounds can hide awkward letter combinations — read the lowercase, no-spaces version out loud once.
  • Leave room to grow. A name tied to one product (OnlyTotes) gets awkward when you expand. Slightly broader names age better.

You don’t need to optimize the name for search. You need a name people remember and trust — then you let your listings do the ranking.
